Percy Jackson & the Olympians

I just finished 'The Lightning Thief' which is the first book in the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series by Rick Riordan. And my first question is: Why haven't I heard of this series before now? I regularly search the internet for reading recommendations and the first place I found a reference to this series was on TvTropes. The fact that the first book of this series was published in 2005 and I never heard of it until late 2009 makes me wonder what other good books I'm missing and what it is that I'm not doing to get good recommendations.

Onto the book itself - I thought it was really good. The protagonist is Percy(Perseus) Jackson, who is a Half-Blood, an offspring of an Olympian God and a mortal. Fans of Harry Potter will probably like this series. It starts with an eleven year old misfit who suddenly discovers that his true heritage is not what he always thought it was. He sets out (is forced actually) on a journey to discover who he is and to prepare for his future (which include learning how to stay alive).

The writing is well paced and funny. Also the book is a good primer for people interested in learning about Greek mythology. Assuming the book's portrayal of Olympian lore is accurate of course. I can't tell if it is because the only Greek lore I know is from the few episodes of Hercules and Xena I've seen, and even I could tell that the lore was horribly mangled.

Time to pick up Book Two.
